Europe is the largest economic area in the world, but for how much longer? With the US and China as major and dynamic competitors, the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus may accelerate the global rebalancing of economic power. Yet if the EU does its job tackling the crisis resolutely, it can strengthen its competitiveness and its social market economy foundations. With the agreement on the Next Generation EU instrument reached at the European Council summit in July, EU leaders sent a strong signal and provided the necessary funds to foster economic recovery and resilience. The EU institutions and member states are now called upon to implement the instrument. This remains a challenge, given its size and the need to indent those reforms and investments that will give the strongest stimulus to the economy while achieving a sustainable economic model and preparing Europe strategically for an increasingly digitalised world at the same time.
